What country is directly to the north of Vietnam? The answer is China.
China lies directly north of Vietnam and shares a land border with the country’s northern provinces. The border stretches for roughly 1,300 kilometers through mountainous terrain before reaching the Gulf of Tonkin in the east. Vietnam’s northern neighbors are therefore dominated by China, while Laos and Cambodia lie to the west and southwest.
The border connects China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Yunnan Province with several Vietnamese regions, including Lào Cai, Hà Giang, Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, and Quảng Ninh. Important crossings include the areas around Hekou–Lào Cai and the Friendship Pass near Lạng Sơn.
China and Vietnam have a long, complex history. Northern Vietnam was governed by successive Chinese dynasties for extended periods before Vietnamese independence was restored in the tenth century. The two countries remain geographically close and economically connected, although their modern relationship has also included disputes, particularly over territory in the South China Sea.
