What country is bordered by Pakistan to the south and Iran to the west?
Answer
Afghanistan
Answer
Afghanistan
The country bordered by Pakistan to the south and Iran to the west is Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia, with Pakistan forming its longest international boundary and Iran lying along its western side.
Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan runs mainly along the east and south and is commonly known as the Durand Line. It was established in 1893 through an agreement between Afghan ruler Abdur Rahman Khan and British diplomat Mortimer Durand. The boundary remains politically sensitive, and successive Afghan governments have disputed Pakistan’s interpretation of it as a permanent international border.
To the west, Afghanistan shares a border with Iran that extends for roughly 900 kilometers. Much of this region is dry, including areas around the Helmand River and the Sistan Basin. The two countries have long-standing cultural and linguistic connections, especially through Dari Persian.
Afghanistan also borders Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. A common geography mistake is placing Pakistan west of Afghanistan; Pakistan is primarily east and south, while Iran is the western neighbor.
