What Corvette model name debuted in 1963?

The story behind the answer

The Corvette model name that debuted in 1963 was Sting Ray. It identified the second-generation Corvette, known internally and commercially as the C2.

The name drew inspiration from the 1959 Sting Ray racing concept associated with designer Bill Mitchell. The production C2 brought that dramatic idea to the road with sharp body lines, hidden headlamps, an independent rear suspension, and a new coupe body style alongside the convertible.

The 1963 model is especially famous for its split rear window, a feature used only during that first C2 model year. Chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov disliked the restricted rear visibility, and the design was replaced by a single rear window for 1964.

Spelling can cause confusion. The original C2 badge used two words—“Sting Ray”—while later Corvette generations and modern versions commonly use the single-word form “Stingray.” The 1963 debut therefore specifically belongs to “Sting Ray.”
