What condition is characterized by a stiff neck and fever?

The story behind the answer

Meningitis is the condition classically associated with a stiff neck and fever.

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Fever and neck stiffness are two of its recognized symptoms, often occurring alongside headache, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, or unusual sleepiness.

The condition can have several causes. Viral infections are common, while bacterial meningitis is less common but can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. Fungal, parasitic, and noninfectious causes are also possible. Vaccines help prevent several important bacterial causes, including meningococcal disease.

A stiff neck and fever do not automatically prove meningitis; they can occur in other illnesses. However, suspected meningitis requires urgent medical assessment, especially when symptoms include confusion, a non-blanching rash, severe headache, seizures, or marked drowsiness. It is also a common mistake to assume a rash must appear before meningitis is serious.
