UPS delivery trucks are predominantly brown, making UPS the answer to the question about the company’s famously brown fleet.
The color is known as Pullman brown, a shade associated with Pullman railroad cars. UPS founder James E. Casey initially favored yellow vehicles, but partner Charlie Soderstrom argued that brown would hide dirt better—an especially practical choice for working delivery vehicles.
The brown-and-gold identity became one of UPS’s strongest visual trademarks. It appears not only on package cars and larger vehicles, but also on driver uniforms and branding. The company’s advertising later turned that recognition into the slogan “What can Brown do for you?”
A common mix-up is confusing UPS’s brown vehicles with FedEx, whose branding traditionally uses purple and orange, or DHL, which is strongly associated with yellow and red. UPS operates many vehicle types worldwide, but the classic brown package car remains its best-known symbol.
