What company produced the 1922 silent film Nosferatu?

The story behind the answer

The company that produced the 1922 silent film Nosferatu was Prana Film.

Prana Film was a short-lived German studio founded in 1921 by Enrico Dieckmann and occultist artist Albin Grau. The company intended to make films about supernatural and occult subjects, and Nosferatu became its defining—and effectively only—production.

Directed by F. W. Murnau from Henrik Galeen’s screenplay, the film changed Bram Stoker’s characters and settings because Prana Film had not secured the rights to Dracula. Count Dracula became Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker became Thomas Hutter, and the story moved to fictional locations. Despite those changes, Stoker’s estate recognized the adaptation and successfully pursued legal action.

Prana Film went bankrupt shortly after the film’s release. The movie nevertheless survived as a landmark of German Expressionist cinema, especially through Max Schreck’s unsettling performance and its stark use of shadow, angular architecture, and plague imagery. Its production history is why the studio name matters in film and vampire trivia.
