What common fish is the main species used as a vertebrate model organism in many labs?

The story behind the answer

What common fish is the main species used as a vertebrate model organism in many labs? The zebrafish is a major vertebrate model organism in laboratory research.

The zebrafish, Danio rerio, is a small freshwater fish native to South Asia and commonly sold as a zebra danio in the aquarium trade. Scientists value it because it breeds readily, produces many offspring, and develops rapidly. Its embryos are relatively large and transparent, develop outside the mother's body, and allow researchers to watch organs and tissues form in living animals.

Zebrafish research became especially influential through the work of George Streisinger at the University of Oregon in the 1970s and 1980s. Large genetic screens in Tübingen and Boston later helped establish the fish as a powerful system for studying gene function and vertebrate development. Researchers now use it in developmental biology, genetics, cancer research, toxicology, immunity, regeneration, and drug discovery.

The species is not a miniature human, so results do not automatically transfer to people. Nevertheless, zebrafish share many biological pathways with mammals, and their small size and rapid development make experiments scalable. Their regenerative ability, including heart and fin repair, is another major reason they attract scientific attention.
