What color is Velma's sweater?

The story behind the answer

Velma's sweater is orange.

Velma Dinkley is usually drawn in a baggy orange turtleneck sweater, paired with a short red pleated skirt, knee-high socks, Mary Jane shoes, and her distinctive black square glasses. That outfit has remained one of the most recognizable designs in the Scooby-Doo franchise, even though details change between television series, films, and reboots.

Velma is typically presented as Mystery Inc.'s intellectual problem-solver. Her scientific knowledge, careful observation, and ability to recognize obscure clues often make her the first member of the group to understand what is really happening. The sweater also helps distinguish her visually from Daphne's dresses and Fred's lighter-colored shirts.

A common mix-up is confusing Velma's orange sweater with Fred's orange ascot, especially in the original series. Velma's skirt is red, but her signature top is orange. The character was partly inspired by Zelda Gilroy, the brainy “sweater girl” played by Sheila Kuehl on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Velma first appeared in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, which debuted in 1969.
