The top stripe on Armenia’s national flag is red.
Armenia’s flag is a horizontal tricolour made of three equal-width bands: red at the top, blue in the middle, and orange at the bottom. The arrangement is easy to confuse with other tricolour flags, especially when the flag is displayed vertically or viewed from a distance, but the standard horizontal order always begins with red.
The modern design was first used by the First Republic of Armenia, established in 1918, and was re-adopted on 24 August 1990 as Armenia moved toward independence from the Soviet Union. The flag’s colours have official interpretations under Armenia’s 2006 national-flag law. Red refers to the Armenian Highland, the people’s continuing struggle for survival, Christianity, and independence.
Blue represents the desire to live under peaceful skies, while orange represents the creative talent and hard-working nature of the Armenian people. Earlier Armenian flag proposals used other colours and patterns, so historical references can cause confusion; the current national flag is specifically the red-blue-orange tricolour.
