What color is the field of Brunei's national flag?

The story behind the answer

The field of Brunei’s national flag is yellow.

Yellow forms the main background behind Brunei’s red national emblem and diagonal black-and-white bands. In Brunei and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, yellow has a strong association with royalty, making it especially appropriate for the flag of the absolute monarchy of Brunei Darussalam.

The flag began as a plain yellow banner. In 1906, two diagonal white and black stripes were added after Brunei became a British protectorate. The red crest was introduced with the constitution adopted on 29 September 1959, producing the modern design used today.

The yellow field is sometimes overlooked because the diagonal stripes and central emblem are visually prominent. The other colors also carry meaning: white and black refer to Brunei’s senior wazirs, while red represents the emblem’s authority, bravery, and unity. The flag’s proportions are 1:2.
