What color is the dragon on Bhutan's national flag?

The dragon on Bhutan’s national flag is white. It is the Druk, Bhutan’s mythical Thunder Dragon, shown across the diagonal boundary between the flag’s yellow and orange halves.

The Druk reflects Bhutan’s Dzongkha name, Druk Yul, meaning “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” and also connects the country with the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The dragon holds a jewel, or norbu, in each of its four claws. These jewels symbolize Bhutan’s wealth, security, and protection.

The white color represents the purity of inner thoughts and deeds that unite Bhutan’s diverse population. The dragon is sometimes described visually as black and white because its outline and many details are rendered in black, but the dragon’s principal body color is white—the standard quiz answer.

The current design has been in use since 1969. Yellow represents civil authority and the monarchy, while orange represents Bhutan’s Buddhist spiritual traditions. Its 2:3 flag ratio is shared by many national flags, but the Druk makes Bhutan’s design especially distinctive.
