The crown on Liechtenstein’s national flag is gold.
Liechtenstein’s flag has two horizontal bands, blue above red, with a princely crown in the upper hoist-side corner. The crown identifies the country as a principality and is rendered in a gold or yellow color.
The crown was added after the 1936 Summer Olympics, when Liechtenstein discovered that its blue-and-red flag was identical to Haiti’s civil flag. The new emblem distinguished the two designs while emphasizing Liechtenstein’s monarchical status. A modified crown was adopted in 1982.
The flag’s colors have older roots: blue and red were used in Liechtenstein from the 18th century and became the national colors in the 19th century. A common mix-up is confusing the crown’s gold with the country’s earlier gold-and-red flag, used before blue replaced gold in 1852.
