What color is the Chicago 'L' Red Line?

The Red Line is one of the Chicago Transit Authority’s rapid-transit routes and runs between Howard on the North Side and 95th/Dan Ryan on the South Side. Through downtown, it uses the State Street subway, linking the North Side main line with the Dan Ryan branch. Its color is an official route identifier rather than merely a nickname.

Chicago’s “L” lines have been officially identified by color since 1993, although older route names and branch names still appear in historical discussions and some CTA materials. The Red Line is especially prominent because it is the system’s busiest route and operates around the clock, every day of the week.

A useful Chicago transit distinction is that the Red Line does not serve O’Hare; that is the Blue Line. The Orange Line serves Midway Airport, while the Green Line covers routes through the South Side and West Side. The Red Line does, however, serve both Wrigley Field and Guaranteed Rate Field, the homes of Chicago’s two Major League Baseball teams.
