The central emblem on Iran's national flag is red.
Iran's current flag has equal horizontal bands of green, white, and red. The Islamic Republic's emblem is placed in red at the center of the white band. Its stylized form combines four crescents and a sword, topped by a shaddah, creating a design that represents the Arabic word Allah.
The modern emblem replaced the older Lion and Sun symbol after the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The current flag was adopted in July 1980, although Iran's green-white-red tricolor has much older constitutional-era roots. The colors themselves are known as pan-Iranian colors and have long been connected with Iranian national identity.
The emblem is easy to confuse with the flag's white central stripe, but the white is the background, not the emblem's color. Another unusual feature is the repeated white Kufic inscription Allahu Akbar: it appears 11 times along each boundary between the green and red bands, for 22 repetitions in all.
