The central disc on Bangladesh’s flag is red.
The disc sits on a dark green field and is shifted slightly toward the hoist, or flagpole side. This offset makes it appear centered when the flag is flying in the wind. The flag’s official proportions are 10:6, and the red disc has a radius equal to one-fifth of the flag’s length.
The modern flag was officially adopted on 17 January 1972, after Bangladesh became independent. Its design grew out of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. An earlier version included a yellow map of Bangladesh inside the red disc, but the map was removed because reproducing it accurately on both sides of the flag was difficult.
Red is commonly interpreted as representing the blood shed during the Liberation War and the rising sun of independence. The green field is associated with Bangladesh’s lush landscape. A frequent mix-up is remembering the earlier yellow map and mistakenly identifying yellow as part of the current central emblem.
