What color is Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s former home in Mexico City?

The story behind the answer

Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s former home in Mexico City, is famously painted cobalt blue.

The name Casa Azul means “Blue House” in Spanish and refers to the building’s vivid blue exterior and interior walls. Kahlo was born in the house in Coyoacán and lived there for much of her life. She and Diego Rivera also made it their home during parts of their marriage.

After Kahlo died in 1954, Rivera arranged for the house to become a museum. The Frida Kahlo Museum opened to the public in 1958 and preserves rooms, personal belongings, artworks, and objects connected with her life.

The house’s color is sometimes described generally as blue, but cobalt blue is the precise answer commonly associated with Casa Azul. It is also important not to confuse the Blue House with the nearby Anahuacalli Museum, another Mexico City institution connected with Rivera.
