What color are the Handmaids' uniforms?

The story behind the answer

The Handmaids’ uniforms are red in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

In the Republic of Gilead, clothing identifies each woman’s social role. Handmaids wear long red dresses because they are assigned to bear children for high-ranking Commanders and their Wives. Their public outfit also includes white head coverings, often called wings, which limit their peripheral vision and help conceal their faces.

The red clothing makes Handmaids visually distinct and turns their reproductive role into a public symbol of state control. The color is also associated with blood, childbirth and biblical imagery, all of which reinforce the regime’s treatment of women as instruments of reproduction.

Other colors belong to different groups. Commanders’ Wives wear blue, Marthas wear green, Aunts wear brown and Daughters wear white. The television adaptation keeps the red Handmaid uniform, adding recognizable details such as a red cloak, white coif and brown boots. The answer is therefore red, though the complete outfit includes several additional colors.
