Top Fuel is described by Wikipedia as the fastest sanctioned category of drag racing.
Top Fuel dragsters are purpose-built machines designed for extraordinary acceleration over a drag strip. Their long, narrow chassis, enormous rear tires and high-output supercharged engines allow the quickest competitors to exceed 340 mph. Modern NHRA Top Fuel races use a 1,000-foot course rather than the traditional quarter-mile distance, reflecting the extreme speeds and braking demands involved.
The category’s name comes from its use of nitromethane-based fuel blends. Top Fuel cars are not simply modified street vehicles; they are specialized racing machines with large engines, short competition runs and parachutes to help slow them after the finish. A run lasts only a few seconds, but the launch produces enormous forces and rapid acceleration.
Top Fuel is sometimes confused with Funny Car because both are elite professional classes and use nitromethane fuel. Funny Cars are also exceptionally fast, but Top Fuel is the category traditionally identified as the fastest sanctioned class. Pro Stock, Pro Modified and Super Gas are separate classes with different rules and performance profiles.
