What city is the capital of Greenland?
Answer
Nuuk
Answer
Nuuk
The capital of Greenland is Nuuk.
Nuuk is Greenland’s largest city and the seat of the territory’s government. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its parliament, the Inatsisartut, meets in Nuuk. The city is also the administrative center of Sermersooq municipality and Greenland’s main cultural and economic hub.
The settlement was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, who relocated a colonial settlement to the site. It was originally called Godthaab, meaning “Good Hope,” while Nuuk is the modern Greenlandic name. The word Nuuk means “cape,” reflecting the city’s position at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord.
Nuuk lies on Greenland’s southwest coast at about 64 degrees north latitude. It is far smaller than most national capitals, with a population of only around 20,000, yet it contains a significant share of Greenland’s residents. A common mix-up is answering Copenhagen: Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, while Nuuk is the capital of Greenland.
