What city has a historic district with over 800 Art Deco buildings?

The story behind the answer

Miami Beach has a historic district with over 800 Art Deco buildings. The city’s best-known concentration is in South Beach, where pastel façades, curved corners, porthole windows, glass blocks, and decorative “eyebrows” define the streetscape.

Most of these buildings date from the 1930s and 1940s, when Miami Beach was developing as a resort destination. Their style often blends traditional Art Deco geometry with Streamline Moderne features inspired by ships, trains, and modern machinery. The result is a distinctive tropical version of the movement.

Many structures were threatened with demolition during the 1970s, when the neighborhood had declined and redevelopment pressures were strong. Preservationist Barbara Baer Capitman and the Miami Design Preservation League helped bring national attention to the area. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

A common mix-up is assuming all of Miami Beach’s historic architecture is concentrated in a single building or a tiny museum zone. The significance comes from the exceptionally large collection spread across the district, making the city an open-air showcase of 20th-century design.
