A doll is the childhood symbol often presented to a quinceañera as her “last doll.”
The gift represents the celebrant’s transition from childhood toward young adulthood. In the traditional symbolic sequence, the quinceañera receives or passes on a doll to show that she is leaving behind toys associated with early childhood.
The custom is sometimes called the “last doll” ceremony. In some families, the celebrant gives the doll to a younger sister, cousin, or another child. Other families use a decorative doll as a keepsake rather than formally passing it to someone else.
Practices differ among countries and families. A quinceañera does not have to include a doll, and contemporary celebrations may replace the ritual with another meaningful gift or omit it altogether.
