Answer
Insect collecting
Answer
Insect collecting
Insect collecting inspired Satoshi Tajiri’s idea for Pokémon.
Tajiri grew up exploring ponds and fields around Machida, Japan, where he enjoyed finding and collecting insects. He later connected that childhood experience to the Game Boy’s ability to link two systems, imagining players exchanging creatures just as collectors might show or trade finds.
The idea became the foundation for Pokémon’s central “catching” and “trading” mechanics. Tajiri wanted the creatures to vary in rarity and location, giving players a reason to explore and communicate with one another. The Game Link Cable therefore became more than a way to compete: it allowed Pokémon to move between cartridges.
Other influences also shaped the finished concept. Tajiri drew on monster and capsule imagery from Japanese popular culture, including Ultraseven, while Game Freak’s team developed the battle system, graphics, music, and Pokédex. The insect-collecting story is sometimes reduced to the phrase “bug catching,” but the broader inspiration was Tajiri’s childhood experience of searching for small creatures and sharing discoveries.
