What ceremonial religious service may precede a quinceañera in Catholic communities?

The story behind the answer

A Catholic Mass may precede a quinceañera in Catholic communities.

This service is often described as a Misa de acción de gracias, or Mass of thanksgiving. It gives the honoree and her family an opportunity to express gratitude and seek a blessing as she reaches fifteen. The Mass may be held before the reception, although practice differs by parish and family.

The religious service is not universal. Some quinceañeras are secular, some families belong to other Christian traditions, and some celebrations consist primarily of a party. Catholic parishes may also set their own requirements for preparation, participation, and scheduling.

The Mass is sometimes mistaken for a rite that legally or sacramentally makes the honoree an adult. It does neither. A quinceañera is a cultural and family milestone, and its religious meaning depends on the participants and their community.
