What Catholic service is traditionally associated with a quinceañera?
Answer
Misa de acción de gracias
Answer
Misa de acción de gracias
The Catholic service traditionally associated with a quinceañera is a misa de acción de gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass.
The service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude for the celebrant’s life and to ask for guidance as she enters a new stage. Depending on local practice, the quinceañera may process into the church, sit with her court, receive a blessing, and participate in prayers with family members.
This religious element is common in Catholic families but is not required for every quinceañera. Secular families may hold only a civil ceremony or reception, and families from other religious traditions may adapt the event to their own beliefs. The party itself is therefore not identical to a Catholic sacrament.
The Spanish phrase is sometimes shortened in conversation to misa de quince años. It should not be confused with a wedding Mass, funeral Mass, or another fixed Catholic rite.
