What Catholic ceremony is often included in a traditional quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A thanksgiving Mass is the Catholic ceremony often included in a traditional quinceañera.

Known in Spanish as a misa de acción de gracias, this service gives the family an opportunity to express gratitude for the celebrant’s life and to ask for guidance for the future. It may take place before the reception, frequently in the family’s parish church.

The Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Families may choose a secular ceremony, particularly when they do not belong to the Catholic Church or when local customs differ. Even Catholic celebrations can vary in their readings, music, promises, and involvement of sponsors.

A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with a wedding ceremony. Although both may involve formal clothing, music, and a church setting, a quinceañera celebrates a fifteenth birthday and does not create a marriage. The reception afterward commonly includes dancing, food, speeches, and symbolic presentations.
