A Catholic Mass is often held before or as part of a traditional quinceañera. The service is commonly called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or thanksgiving Mass, in Spanish-speaking Catholic communities.
During the liturgy, the quinceañera may receive a blessing and make commitments connected with faith and family. She may present flowers, carry a Bible and rosary, or be accompanied by parents and sponsors. The precise practices depend on the parish and local tradition.
The Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Some families hold a secular reception, while others belong to another Christian denomination or another faith. Even within Catholic communities, parishes can differ in preparation requirements and ceremony format.
A quinceañera Mass is also distinct from the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Matrimony. The celebration itself is not a sacrament. It is a cultural and religious observance that may include prayer, blessing, and thanksgiving while marking the honoree’s fifteenth birthday.
