What canal machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to remove mud from waterways?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a dredger to remove mud and sediment from waterways.

Leonardo studied canals as transportation routes and as systems that required continual maintenance. His dredging concepts used mechanical devices to lift material from the bottom of a channel, reducing the need for workers to excavate underwater by hand. Some drawings show bucket-based mechanisms that could scoop sediment and move it toward a vessel or bank.

Dredging was especially important in Renaissance Italy, where canals connected cities, powered mills, supplied water, and supported trade. Accumulated silt could make a channel shallow and obstruct boats, so a machine that removed the material had clear practical value.

Leonardo proposed several related water-engineering devices, and not every surviving sketch represents one finalized machine. The general term dredger is more precise than calling the design a barge or a water wheel: a dredger’s defining purpose is excavating material from underwater.
