What cable connects two Game Boy systems for trading or battling in Pokémon Red and Blue?

The story behind the answer

The Game Link Cable connects two Game Boy systems for trading or battling in Pokémon Red and Blue.

The original games were designed for multiplayer interaction even though each player used a separate Game Boy and cartridge. By connecting the systems with a Game Link Cable, players could exchange Pokémon, battle one another, and obtain species unavailable in their own version.

This connection system was essential for completing the first Pokédex. Red and Blue contained version-exclusive Pokémon, so a player could not normally collect all 151 species alone. Several Pokémon also evolved only after being traded, making the cable part of the game’s progression rather than an optional novelty.

The Game Link Cable was a physical accessory for compatible Nintendo handhelds. It should not be confused with the Nintendo 64 Transfer Pak, which connected Game Boy cartridges to certain Nintendo 64 games, or with later wireless trading systems.

Modern Pokémon games use wireless communication and online services, but the original cable-based system helped establish the series’ social identity. Trading Pokémon with another person became one of the franchise’s defining ideas from its first generation.
