Independence Hall hosted the Declaration debate commemorated by America250; it was then called the Pennsylvania State House.
The building stands in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served as the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress. Congress debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776. The Constitutional Convention also met in the same building in 1787.
Its original name was the Pennsylvania State House. The name Independence Hall became popular later because of its association with the Declaration and the founding of the United States. The building is part of Independence National Historical Park.
Independence Hall is often confused with nearby sites such as Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. Federal Hall in New York City has a separate connection to the first U.S. Congress and George Washington’s inauguration.
