Independence Hall, originally called the Pennsylvania State House, hosted the Declaration’s adoption celebrated by America250.
The building stands in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served as the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress in 1776. Congress approved the Declaration of Independence there on July 4, making the building one of the most important sites associated with America’s founding.
The building was renamed Independence Hall in the nineteenth century. It also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where delegates drafted the United States Constitution. That connection makes the site important to both the independence movement and the creation of the federal government.
Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park. The Liberty Bell was displayed nearby and is now housed in the Liberty Bell Center. The hall’s historical importance comes from the events held inside it, not from being the place where every delegate necessarily signed the parchment on the same day.
