The Pennsylvania State House hosted the Continental Congress when it adopted the Declaration honored by America250.
The building is now called Independence Hall and stands in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. It was completed in 1753 as the seat of Pennsylvania’s colonial government and later became the meeting place of the Continental Congress.
The Second Continental Congress debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776. The same building also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where delegates drafted the United States Constitution.
“Independence Hall” is the familiar modern name, but “Pennsylvania State House” is the building’s historical name during the colonial and revolutionary periods. It is sometimes confused with Congress Hall, another nearby Philadelphia building that later housed the federal government.
