What building, later renamed Independence Hall, hosted the Second Continental Congress in 1776?

The story behind the answer

The Pennsylvania State House, later renamed Independence Hall, hosted the Second Continental Congress in 1776.

The building stood in Philadelphia and served as the meeting place where delegates debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was originally the seat of Pennsylvania’s colonial government. Its best-known historical name, Independence Hall, reflects its association with the Declaration and the founding of the United States.

The building also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787. That later gathering produced the United States Constitution, making the site important to both the country’s declaration of independence and its federal system of government.

The name “Independence Hall” was adopted after the revolutionary era. Visitors sometimes confuse it with nearby Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. They were separate buildings used by different Continental Congresses.
