Independence Hall in Philadelphia is most closely associated with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there when it debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Constitutional Convention also met in the building in 1787 and drafted the United States Constitution.
The structure is part of Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Assembly Room is especially important because it witnessed debates over both independence and the later framework of the federal government.
The Declaration was not signed by every delegate on July 4. Congress adopted the text on that date, while most delegates signed the engrossed parchment on August 2, 1776. This distinction explains why the building remains linked to both the document’s adoption and its later formal signing.
