Independence Hall in Philadelphia hosted the Constitutional Convention and is closely linked with America250.
The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress used it during the American Revolution, and delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776. Eleven years later, delegates met in the same building for the Constitutional Convention.
The convention drafted the United States Constitution during the summer of 1787. The document was signed in the State House on September 17, 1787, although the Constitution itself does not call the building “Independence Hall”; that name became common later because of its association with independence.
Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park. Carpenters’ Hall, another nearby landmark, hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, so the two Philadelphia buildings are frequently mixed up.
