Independence Hall, formerly the Pennsylvania State House, hosted Congress when it adopted the Declaration of Independence honored by America250.
The building stands in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. The Second Continental Congress met there in 1776, and the delegates adopted the Declaration on July 4. The same building later hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, making it significant in both the independence movement and the creation of the U.S. Constitution.
Its earlier name explains why historical accounts may call it the Pennsylvania State House. The building was renamed Independence Hall in the nineteenth century as its association with the founding of the United States became more prominent.
Independence Hall is often confused with Federal Hall in New York City, where George Washington took the oath of office in 1789. It is also distinct from Carpenters’ Hall, which hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774.
