What birthday does a traditional quinceañera celebrate?

The story behind the answer

A traditional quinceañera celebrates a girl’s fifteenth birthday.

The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the celebrant and, commonly, to the celebration itself. The milestone marks a transition from childhood toward young womanhood in many Latin American communities and in Latino communities elsewhere.

The celebration may include a formal dress, a court of attendants, a ceremonial dance, family speeches, and a large reception. Customs differ by country, family, religion, and generation, so not every quinceañera follows the same program.

The event is sometimes compared with a debutante ball, but the traditions are not identical. A quinceañera is specifically tied to the fifteenth birthday; a sweet sixteen, by contrast, centers on the sixteenth birthday and developed in a different cultural setting.
