What birthday did Fenway Park celebrate in 2012?

The story behind the answer

Fenway Park celebrated its 100th birthday in 2012. The Boston ballpark opened on April 20, 1912, when the Boston Red Sox played the New York Highlanders, the team that later became the New York Yankees.

Fenway was built in Boston’s Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood and has been the Red Sox’s home ever since. Its unusually compact urban site helped preserve distinctive features that became famous, including the towering Green Monster in left field, Pesky’s Pole in right field, and the unusual angles known as the Triangle.

The centennial was a celebration of the park’s opening, not a claim that every part of the current structure is unchanged. Fenway underwent major rebuilding in 1934 and numerous renovations later, while retaining its historic identity. It remains Major League Baseball’s oldest active ballpark. In the same centennial year, Fenway Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
