What Bangkok neighborhood is home to Thipsamai's original restaurant?

The story behind the answer

Thipsamai’s original restaurant is in Samran Rat, a historic neighborhood of Bangkok.

The restaurant stands on Maha Chai Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District. Samran Rat is also widely associated with the older name Pratu Phi, meaning “Ghost Gate,” so descriptions of Thipsamai may use either name. The area is known for late-night street food and traditional eateries.

Thipsamai began as a street stall in the 1950s before moving into a permanent shophouse in 1966. Its name comes from Samai Baisamut, whose family sold pad thai before the business became the famous restaurant it is today. The original location is often called Thipsamai Pratu Phi because of the neighborhood’s traditional nickname.

A common mix-up is confusing Samran Rat with Bangkok districts such as Pathum Wan or Bang Rak, where later branches or other famous restaurants may be found. Thipsamai now has additional locations, but the original restaurant remains identified with Samran Rat and Maha Chai Road.
