The bacterium that produces the antibiotic vancomycin is Amycolatopsis orientalis. This Gram-positive soil bacterium was first known as Streptomyces orientalis, and older references may still use that name. Vancomycin was isolated from it in 1953 after researchers screened a soil sample collected on the island of Borneo.
The discovery was part of Eli Lilly’s global search for useful microorganisms. Chemist Edmund Kornfeld led the work, and the compound was initially identified as “compound 05865.” Its name, vancomycin, is commonly said to reflect the idea of “vanquishing” infection. The drug became especially valuable against serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria.
Amycolatopsis orientalis does not simply secrete a ready-made bottle of vancomycin. It builds the molecule through a sophisticated biosynthetic pathway involving nonribosomal peptide synthetases. The resulting antibiotic blocks bacterial cell-wall construction by binding to cell-wall precursors. Vancomycin is therefore not made by Penicillium, the mold associated with penicillin, and it is distinct from antibiotics produced by organisms such as Bacillus subtilis or Streptomyces griseus.
