What Aztec office ranked as a powerful deputy to the tlatoani?

The story behind the answer

Cihuacoatl was the powerful deputy to the tlatoani in the Mexica government. Although the word means “female serpent” and also names a goddess, the political office was normally held by a high-ranking man who served as the ruler’s second-in-command.

The cihuacoatl supervised major internal affairs, including administration, justice, finance, and aspects of military and religious policy. The tlatoani directed the state as its supreme ruler, while the cihuacoatl helped manage the capital and could act as the ruler’s representative or ceremonial substitute.

This office became especially influential under Tlacaelel, who served several rulers and helped shape Mexica state ideology, historical traditions, and expansionist policy. The cihuacoatl was not simply a military commander: that role belonged more directly to offices such as tlacateccatl and tlacochcalcatl. Nor should the title be confused with calpixqui, an official associated with tribute and administration. Its broad authority made it comparable to a chief minister or viceroy.
