What automated machine did Leonardo da Vinci design in the form of an armored human figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight in the form of an armored human figure. The automaton was intended to imitate human movements through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears hidden inside armor.

Leonardo created the design around 1495 for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The figure may have been able to sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and visor. The surviving drawings were rediscovered and later used to build modern reconstructions.

The mechanical knight is often called Leonardo’s robot, although “robot” is a modern term that did not exist in Renaissance Italy. It was a programmable-looking automaton rather than an electronic machine or an autonomous artificial-intelligence system.

Because no original completed knight survives, scholars rely on Leonardo’s diagrams and related engineering notes. Reconstructions have helped test whether the proposed mechanisms could reproduce the movements shown in the design.
