What Australian Easter symbol is a rabbit-sized marsupial called?

The story behind the answer

The Australian Easter symbol is the Easter bilby.

The bilby is a long-eared, burrowing marsupial native to Australia. It became an alternative to the European Easter Bunny because rabbits are an invasive species in Australia and have caused serious environmental and agricultural damage.

The idea was popularized by author Rose-Marie Dusting, whose 1991 children’s book introduced children to the Easter Bilby. Conservation groups later used chocolate bilbies to raise money and awareness for the greater bilby, a threatened species.

The greater bilby is not the same animal as a rabbit, although both have long ears and live in burrows. Easter bilby products are especially associated with Australian conservation campaigns, and sales can support habitat protection and captive-breeding work. Australia still celebrates Easter with rabbits too, but the bilby provides a distinctly local symbol with a conservation message.
