Leonardo da Vinci sketched an organ gun with multiple barrels arranged in rows.
The weapon, sometimes called a volley gun, was intended to fire several projectiles in a coordinated sequence or volley. Leonardo’s drawings show groups of small gun barrels mounted on a frame, allowing a single platform to concentrate fire across a broad area.
The name “organ gun” comes from the visual resemblance between the parallel barrels and the pipes of a pipe organ. It does not mean that the weapon used musical technology. The design belongs to Leonardo’s military engineering studies, which also included fortifications, artillery, and armored vehicles.
Leonardo’s organ gun was a concept rather than a well-documented battlefield success. Multi-barrel weapons existed in different forms before and after his lifetime, so the sketch should not be treated as the invention of every later volley gun.
