What articulated mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design for a Milanese pageant around 1495?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robot knight, an articulated mechanical figure, for a Milanese pageant around 1495.

The machine was created during Leonardo’s service to Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Notes and drawings indicate that the armored figure could sit, stand, move its arms, and move its jaw through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. It was probably intended as theatrical entertainment rather than as a practical labor machine.

No original robot knight has survived, and scholars reconstructed its operation from Leonardo’s notebooks. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation based on the drawings. The reconstruction helped demonstrate that the mechanism was mechanically plausible.

The invention is often described as an early humanoid robot. That label is modern, but it is useful because the figure combined programmable-looking motion, articulated joints, and mechanical power transmission. It should not be confused with Leonardo’s later mechanical lion, another pageant-related design.
