What are the fearsome creatures in Dan Simmons's 'Hyperion' called?
Answer
The Shrike
Answer
The Shrike
The fearsome creatures in Dan Simmons’s Hyperion are called the Shrike.
The Shrike is a terrifying, enigmatic figure associated with the Time Tombs on the planet Hyperion. It is described as a four-armed creature combining organic and mechanical qualities, with a body covered in blades, thorns, razor wire, and other cutting edges. Its fingers resemble scalpels, and its feet end in curved blades.
In the first two Hyperion Cantos novels, the Shrike’s motives and origin are deliberately uncertain. It can apparently manipulate time and may appear almost instantaneously. Some victims are killed immediately, while others are taken to the Tree of Thorns, an immense artificial structure where they remain impaled in perpetual agony.
The Shrike is feared and worshipped by the Church of the Final Atonement, often called the Shrike Cult. The Void Which Binds is a cosmic concept, the TechnoCore is a civilization of artificial intelligences, and the Ousters are a human offshoot—not the name of the creature.
