What arachnid order includes camel spiders and wind scorpions?

The story behind the answer

The arachnid order that includes camel spiders and wind scorpions is Solifugae.

Solifuges are distinct from both true spiders and scorpions, despite those common names. The order was named by Swedish arachnologist Carl Jakob Sundevall in 1833, and its name comes from Latin words meaning “those that flee from the sun.” Most species are adapted to dry environments, including deserts, rocky slopes, and arid grasslands.

Their most striking feature is a pair of powerful, pincer-like chelicerae, which they use to seize and chew prey. Solifuges eat insects and other arthropods, but larger individuals may tackle small vertebrates. They lack spinnerets and silk, so they cannot make spider webs, and they also lack the scorpion’s segmented tail and stinger.

A common myth claims that camel spiders grow enormous, outrun horses, or attack sleeping people. In reality, their danger to humans is negligible. The order contains more than 1,000 described species, with the largest reaching roughly 12–15 centimetres including the legs.
