The apelike creature said to inhabit the Himalayas is the Yeti.
The Yeti is a legendary or cryptid figure associated with the Himalayan mountain range, especially Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and surrounding regions. Descriptions commonly portray it as a large, hairy, bipedal animal. In Western popular culture, it is often called the Abominable Snowman, although that English label does not fully represent the creature’s Himalayan cultural background.
Yeti traditions draw on Sherpa and other Himalayan folklore, while reported encounters may have been influenced by sightings of bears, yaks, or footprints distorted by melting snow. The figure also appears in Tibetan Buddhist contexts, where some stories describe Yetis as nonhuman beings capable of spiritual conduct.
No reliable scientific evidence has established the Yeti as an undiscovered ape. DNA tests and later investigations of alleged hair, dung, and footprints have repeatedly pointed toward known animals, especially bears. The Yeti is therefore best treated as folklore and cryptozoology, not confirmed zoology.
