Fireworks are an annual New Year's Eve event held at Edinburgh Castle as part of Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is a major Scottish New Year festival whose program includes concerts, street celebrations, torchlight events and fireworks. The castle provides the dramatic elevated backdrop for the midnight display, which can be seen across much of the city when weather and event arrangements permit.
Hogmanay is the Scots word for New Year's Eve or the New Year festivities. Modern Edinburgh celebrations grew into a large organized festival in the late twentieth century, building on Scotland's strong New Year customs. The program can change from year to year, so individual concerts and access arrangements are not permanent features.
The castle fireworks are distinct from the Torchlight Procession, which is a separate event traditionally held before the main street party. Edinburgh's Hogmanay therefore includes several spectacles rather than one single ceremony.
