What anniversary is Colorado observing alongside America’s 250th anniversary in 2026?
Answer
Colorado’s sesquicentennial
Colorado’s sesquicentennial is the anniversary Colorado is observing alongside America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The state entered the Union in 1876, making 2026 the 150th anniversary of statehood.
Colorado’s initiative is called America 250–Colorado 150. It combines the national semiquincentennial with the state’s sesquicentennial, creating a paired commemoration rather than treating the two anniversaries as the same event.
The terms describe different milestones. A semiquincentennial marks 250 years, while a sesquicentennial marks 150 years. Colorado’s statehood anniversary is therefore one century shorter than the national anniversary. The state commission’s observances began in 2025 and continue through the end of 2026.
