The United States Bicentennial celebrated the 200th anniversary of American independence in 1976.
The Bicentennial marked two centuries since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Celebrations took place nationwide and included parades, exhibitions, concerts, historical programs, commemorative objects, and special public events.
Philadelphia hosted major ceremonies because of its direct connection to the Declaration and the Continental Congress. The anniversary was broader than a single festival, with communities across the country developing local projects and displays.
America250 follows this tradition but marks 250 years rather than 200. The earlier Bicentennial is also useful for distinguishing anniversary terms: centennial means 100 years, sesquicentennial means 150, bicentennial means 200, and semiquincentennial means 250.
